NEWSFEED: EXTENDED
* ATTACK ADS UNDER ATTACK
The Office of Fair and Equitable Elections have received complaints from at least three campaigns regarding the use of "fake images", "false representations" and allegations of "hired look alikes" to cast dark clouds on the campaigns of an otherwise positive campaign cycle. The use of unauthorized images (i.e. images not coming directly from official sources) is strictly prohibited. Although lasting less than five seconds in a commercial highlighting the "Benefits" of Bennet Snerf (VP candidate for Virginia Virginia), the image of out of control candidates of other campaigns have many talking law suits. One unnamed representative from an opposing camp said simply: "there's no place for ugly, and this kind of publicity smells of trash" (See bottom picture)
*BIG MOVERS: ERNIE and VIRGINIA
There's been ups and downs so far in the election cycle. Cookie Monster and his running mate Alistair Cookie have proven that early results do not necessarily get at the heart of public opinion. Big leaps like the Cookies, however, are not the only way to "capture the day." Worth watching are the nearly written off candidacies of Ernie and Bert as well as of that of the Virginia/Snerf ticket. Ernie and Bert's slow rise can be charted if one takes a broader look at the poll results. Starting from 0 "votes" in the first poll, the Ernie / Bert team inched their way forward to two "votes", four "votes", "seven" votes, etc... until they ended up in the most recent count the a very respectable third place, only two "votes" behind the second position Big Bird/Snuff ticket. Likewise, but perhaps more chaotic in its climb, Virginia Virginia, along with controversial running mate Bennett Snerf, sits at a position which is a small reach away from third place.
*BIRD GRAPHIC GETS MIXED REVIEWS
No complaint has been lodged thus far for the newest of the campaign angles from the Big Bird Campaign, although a lot of talk is taking place. The "BIF/PIB" Slogan is going Big (see image at bottom), but not all voters are exactly sure what to make of it. Said one anonymous voice: "it seems as if there's a mixed message from the candidate who is most consistent in the polls. That bothers me." Just the same this new direction perhaps is an attempt to break the regularity of second place, a position only once bettered when Big Bird was tied for first with Oscar the Grouch. For those scratching their heads, this technique at least is getting them to think about the big bird on campus.
*CAMPAIGNS WEIGH IN ON EDUCATION AND EQUALITY
In two Panel Discussions the candidates managers managed to offer their two cents on the state of education and the state of equality in the US. All campaigns expressed an understanding of the importance of both issues, but many differed in their approaches to the topics. the Cadabby/Elmo ticket found technology to be the pathway to fairness in education, where the Cookie team concentrated on the allocation of resources on a broader scale, mentioning not only technology, but also teacher pay and the affordability of higher education. The campaign managers representing Oscar the Grouch and Roosevelt Franklin took a different approach, the former passionately discussing the need to reduce the achievement gap, and the latter bringing up the necessity of early education (specifically in literacy and numeracy).
Interestingly the Franklin team added to the discussion in the Equality panel that followed, by stating that education indeed had an unalienable connection with equality, and pushed for improved education for all, whatever the color of the skin. This would ultimately assist in the increase in college graduates and be reflected in the overall income rate increasing in ethnically diverse areas across the nation. The Virginia/Snerf team offered this: "we will be talking to school boards across the nation to improve the overall pay rate of teachers, thereby attracting the most qualified teachers to the most noble of professions." The Count / 2HM team agreed that education was tied with equality but spoke more broadly about social issues such as immigration reform.
More panels are expected later this week.
*PRODUCT PLACEMENT FOUND ITS PLACE in 2017
There's a new trend hitting the freshman voting public: Water Bottle Advertisements (WBA). "Everyone needs to stay hydrated, so why not support the candidate we love" said one enthusiastic Ernie and Bert supporter, as she sipped from her newly ornamented "Take the Journey with Ernie" WBA. Another student added colour to the competitive advertising with the stylish yellow of the Big Bird Campaign, and a young scholar enjoyed his hydration process while showing off his "Me Want My Drinkie: Vote for Cookie" WBA. We'll see if these new forms of advertising hits the spot in the voting booth on June 6th.
