Extra Reading
Each quarter by the end of the quarter, students are expected to complete an extra reading. Due to an error in book distribution, I decided to alter the way to do this and open the assignment up for student choice (limited).
I ask that students who have started the first reading (assigned as Roll of Thunder), either turn the book in so that they can select a book appropriate to their reading level, and one in which they have not yet read. If the student has already started and/or finished the book, they may use it as their first selection.
The "rules" are simple.
1. Students are to read a selected book from the list by the end of the quarter.
2. Students can expect that items from the book are "fair game" on tests, quizzes, etc.
3. Students are encouraged to use the class wikispace for discussion.
4. Students are to only read books approved by the teacher. These books are from the reading list below. If a student wishes to read a different book, it should be approved before starting.
5. Students are to read books that they have not read yet and/or seen movie versions of.
6. Students can request a copy, or, most likely, find a copy at their local library / online book site.
7. Students may / may not pick books that other members of World Lit I are selecting and work on ways to collaborate discussions, etc.
8. Students are to select the reading within the first week of the second month and state which book they are reading/obtain a copy from the teacher.
The list is as follows:
Alas Babylon, Frank
Cold Sassy Tree, Burns
The House on Mango Street, Cisneros
The Little Prince, De Saint Exupery
Our Town, Wilder
Fahrenheit 451, Bradbury
Hiroshima, Hersey
A Place Where the Sea Remembers, Benetiz
Rabbit Proof Fence, Pilkington
Red Scarf Girl, Jiang
Cyrano de Bergerac, Rostand
To Kill A Mockikngbird, Lee
